Macrolides
Macrolides are antibiotics that attack cocci bacteria (except enterococci). Since sinusitis is frequently caused by cocci bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae, macrolides can be very effective treatment. All of the macrolides can be given by mouth; erythromycin, lincomycin, azithromycin, and clindamycin can also be administered by injection. The macrolides are bacteriostatic. They work by slowing or blocking protein formation in bacteria. The most common macrolides used for sinusitis are azithromycin and clarithromycin.
