They are used in high doses to relieve heartburn, heal ulcers, and reduce inflammation of the esophagus resulting from acid reflux (reflux esophagitis). These drugs are available with or without a prescription. Side effects are rare and generally cease when the medication is stopped. Minor side effects include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, headache, insomnia, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting. Major side effects include confusion and hallucinations (usually in elderly or critically ill patients), enlargement of the breasts, and impotence (usually in patients on high doses for prolonged periods). Other rare side effects include irregular heartbeat, impotence, rash, vision changes, and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
