Surgery to remove diseased tissue and bony partitions from the ethmoid sinuses is called an ethmoidectomy. Today, it is usually performed endoscopically, in which case it is classified as a Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS). For various reasons, however, the surgeon may instead perform an ethmoidectomy through an incision in the face.
