Antihistamines
Antihistamines combat allergic problems that lead to nasal congestion. Over-the-counter antihistamines may treat allergic symptoms of itching, sneezing, sinus congestion, and runny nose. They are not, however, a cure for sinus obstruction or congestion. Over-the-counter antihistamines have a potential for sedation: grogginess, sleepiness, and dryness may be side effects. Prescription antihistamines, on the other hand, are usually non-sedating.

Antihistamine-and-decongestant combination products relieve multiple symptoms of congestion and runny nose and reduce the side effects of both products. Since antihistamines are often sedating, decongestants are added to make them "non-drowsy."
