Over-the-counter antihistamines may treat allergic symptoms of itching, sneezing, sinus congestion, and runny nose. They are not, however, a cure for sinus obstruction or congestion. Over-the-counter antihistamines have a potential for sedation: grogginess, sleepiness, and dryness may be side effects. Prescription antihistamines, on the other hand, are usually non-sedating. Antihistamine-and-decongestant combination products relieve multiple symptoms of congestion and runny nose and reduce the side effects of both products.
