Glossary of TermsI Image Guided Surgery (IGS) Since some sinus surgical procedures are close to the optic nerves, eyes, and brain, surgeons need the best possible information during surgery to guide their surgical instruments inside the nasal cavities. This detailed information is supplied primarily through the endoscope and by the surgeon's detailed knowledge of anatomy. An image-guided surgery system (IGS) means that additional integrated information is supplied through CT-scan images taken before the operation. Data from a preoperative CT scan is downloaded into a computer in the operating room and special sensors called localizers are attached to surgical instruments. Once the patient's head position is registered into the computer, the surgeon can tell in three dimensions and at all times where the tip of an instrument is on the CT-scan download. By giving the surgeon an additional visual reference for the working end of the instruments, IGS technology supplies valuable information beyond what the endoscope alone can provide.
